Skink Breeding Process

There is no specific procedure that you need to follow for the breeding of your blue tongue skink as long as you are getting the proper results at the end. However, it is preferable that you get your lizards health checked first before thinking about breeding and mating it; along with this, you should also check the health of the mate that you are introduction for breeding. The mate should not have any mites or parasites that may damage the health of your own pet. One you are sure that both the breeding partners are in good shape, you can choose any procedure that suits you the best.

The breeding season for skink is usually in the winters i.e. from October to mid-February; it is necessary to prepare the lizard for breeding beforehand. For this purpose, it is kept in its enclosure for a longer period every day with little exposure to sunlight. Keep the procedure slow and steady i.e. start by decreasing the sunlight exposure by half an hour every day so that by the end of it, the total sunlight your lizard gets is reduced to no more than three to four hours every day. Along with this, make sure that your lizard has a cozy nest of its own so that it does not get sick but at the same time, the nest should not be warm enough to stop the animal from doing into hibernation The activity of blue tongue skink is reduced to just getting up to drink water or to feed itself.

During this time, the body prepares for breeding on its own. The feeding of your pet should be reduced to once in every fifteen days or so but at the same time, water should always be available for it. Make sure that you do not disturb the lizard during this time; the process of hibernation or brumation continues for at least four to five months after which the animal is completely ready for breeding. By the end of February, the lizards start getting out of hibernation, they will initially reject too much food but in about 15 days, their body functions and activities will return to normal. You can introduce the mate to your lizard for the breeding to start as soon as the lizard gets back to its normal functioning.

These lizards can get very aggressive during mating, so you will have to keep an eye on them to ensure that no permanent injuries or damages are done by both the male and the female.  Observe their behavior for some time and remove substrate before introducing them with the mate.
